The Process & Discipline
A Life Built Around Jazz
Music has been part of my life since I was young. I began playing electric bass at age 14, long before the upright bass became such an important part of my professional identity. Over time, both instruments gave me different ways to understand rhythm, harmony, improvisation, and the role of the bass.
Bruce Gertz Music has roots dating to 1982, while my career as a music educator reaches back even further. I have served as a Professor of Bass at Berklee College of Music since 1976. Through the years, performing and teaching have remained closely connected parts of my musical life.
Even after decades in music, I don't believe creativity has a finish line. Most mornings, I make coffee and sit at the baby grand piano in my Melrose home to compose. Sometimes a complete piece begins to emerge. Other mornings, I find only a short musical idea. That small idea can still become the seed of something larger.
Instrumental Versatility
From Electric Bass to Upright Bass
Although I am widely known for playing upright bass, my musical roots are also firmly connected to electric bass. I started playing electric bass at 14 and continue to play and teach it.
Working with both instruments has influenced how I think about bass instruction and performance. Technique matters, but technique serves the music. Listening matters. Time matters. Interaction matters. Developing your own musical voice matters too.
That perspective carries into my work as a jazz music instructor. When I teach, I bring lessons learned from decades of performing, recording, and composing into the educational experience.
I want musicians to understand more than what notes to play. I want them to listen more deeply, interact with other musicians, and make meaningful musical choices.

Pedagogy & Service
Decades of Jazz Education
Teaching has been one of the central parts of my musical life. As a Professor of Bass at Berklee College of Music since 1976, I have had the opportunity to work with generations of developing musicians.
Recognition & Honors
My contributions to music education have received multiple recognition awards from the International Association of Jazz Educators and the Jazz Education Network.
Leadership & Adjudication
My educational experience has also extended beyond regular teaching. I have served on the advisory board of the International Society of Bassists and as an adjudicator at the Clark Terry UNH Jazzer's Festival.
These experiences have strengthened my belief that education and performance should inform each other. Teaching encourages me to examine musical ideas closely. Performing keeps those ideas connected to the experience of creating music with other people.
The Musical Conversation
A Career of Performance & Collaboration
Jazz is built on interaction. I have been fortunate to share that musical conversation with many remarkable artists throughout my career.
Collaborators & Credits
My performance and recording credits include work with Gary Burton, Jerry Bergonzi, John Abercrombie, Bill Frisell, Dave Brubeck, Joe Lovano, Mike Stern, Count Basie, and many others.
Every collaboration creates a different musical situation. You have to listen, respond, support, and know when to make your own statement. Those experiences have helped shape the way I approach improvisation, accompaniment, composition, and live performance.
I continue to bring that perspective to the stage as a bassist, composer, recording artist, and bandleader.

Philosophy & Artistry
My Approach to Music
I believe musicianship grows through curiosity, discipline, listening, and consistent work. You can always discover another way to hear a phrase, approach an instrument, or understand the musicians playing around you.
"My own evolution has also involved becoming increasingly aware of the listener. Boston Globe writer Bob Blumenthal recognized that development while describing music with the power to evoke “feeling, thought, and motion."
That balance matters to me.
Jazz can be sophisticated without losing its emotional connection. Technique can be advanced without becoming the purpose of the music. Ultimately, the question is whether the music communicates something.
That philosophy connects what I do when I sit down to compose, teach a bass lesson, record a project, or step onto a stage.
