Live Performance

Why Live Jazz Is Different Every Time

A schedule tells you when and where a performance happens. It cannot tell you exactly what the music will become once the musicians begin playing.

Improvisation Live

Improvisation in the Moment

That uncertainty is part of what makes jazz interesting.

Improvisation allows musicians to make choices in real time. We listen to rhythm, harmony, dynamics, phrasing, and the ideas developing around us. One musician can introduce something unexpected, and the entire group may respond.

Even familiar music can take a different direction from one performance to another.

As a bassist, I pay close attention to that interaction. Bass has a particular responsibility in jazz because it often connects rhythm and harmony. It can establish a foundation, respond to a soloist, interact with the drums, or step forward with its own musical statement.

A live performance gives you the opportunity to hear those relationships develop as they happen.

Musicians I've Shared the Stage With

Over the years, I have performed and recorded with artists including Gary Burton, Jerry Bergonzi, John Abercrombie, Bill Frisell, Dave Brubeck, Joe Lovano, Mike Stern, Larry Coryell, Count Basie, and many others.

Composition to Stage

From Composition to Live Performance

Many performances begin with ideas developed long before anyone steps onto a stage.

For me, composition is a daily practice. Most mornings, I sit at the piano in my Melrose home and work on music. Some ideas develop quickly. Others begin as fragments that may need time before their direction becomes clear.

When a composition moves into a performance setting, it changes. Other musicians bring their own sound, instincts, and interpretation. Written material becomes the foundation for interaction rather than a set of instructions that determines every detail.

That transition from composition to live performance is one of the things that keeps the music fresh for me. The piece has an identity, but the musicians continue discovering what it can become.
