Jazz Vinyl Records & LPs by Bruce Gertz

Vinyl creates a particular kind of listening experience. You choose a record, put it on, and spend time with the music as a complete work. I'm Bruce Gertz, a jazz bassist, composer, educator, recording artist, and bandleader based in Melrose, Massachusetts. My available LPs give jazz listeners locally and worldwide another way to experience music from my recording career.

Focused Listening

Jazz Made for Focused Listening

Listening to an LP can be different from moving quickly between individual tracks. A record invites you to experience music in sequence and hear how one piece relates to the next.

That approach suits jazz particularly well.

Jazz recordings preserve interaction. A composition may establish the structure, but musicians shape the performance through listening, improvisation, rhythm, dynamics, and spontaneous decisions.

When you stay with a complete recording, you can hear those relationships develop.

You may notice how a musical idea introduced early in a performance returns later. You might hear the bass change its relationship with the drums or recognize how one musician's phrase influences another. For me, those details are part of what makes repeated listening rewarding.

A Changing Relationship

A recording does not change, but your relationship with what you hear can.

Bass on Record

The Sound and Role of Bass on Record

The bass has been at the center of my musical life for decades, connecting different parts of an ensemble while shaping the direction of the music.

Upright & Electric

The Bass Connecting the Ensemble

I began playing electric bass at age 14 and later became widely known for my work on upright bass. Each instrument offers its own sound and physical approach, but both have taught me to think deeply about rhythm, harmony, space, and interaction.

In jazz, the bass often connects different parts of an ensemble. It can reinforce harmony while working rhythmically with the drums. It can establish movement beneath a soloist or step forward with its own melodic statement. Sometimes its most important contribution is subtle.

Listening on vinyl can encourage the kind of sustained attention that reveals those details. Rather than hearing bass only as background, listen to how it influences the direction of the music.

Follow the bass's relationship with the other instruments and notice when it becomes part of a more open conversation.

Following the Bass Through a Record

From Piano to Ensemble

Many recordings begin long before musicians enter a studio, often starting at the piano in my Melrose, Massachusetts home.

From Idea to Record

From Composition to the Finished Recording

Most mornings, I sit at the piano and compose. Sometimes I find a complete musical direction. Sometimes I leave with a small idea that needs more time.

Those ideas can eventually develop into music for an ensemble. Once other musicians become involved, the composition begins to change. Every player brings a particular sound, history, and musical imagination to the material. Jazz leaves room for those individual voices.

The recording captures that meeting point between composition and performance. As a bandleader, I have recorded more than 20 albums.

Vinyl provides one physical format for preserving and experiencing that recorded work.

Not every recording in my discography should be assumed to be available on vinyl. The current product listings determine which Bruce Gertz LPs are available for purchase.

A Physical Format

A Physical Connection to Recorded Jazz

My broader discography includes recordings such as Blue Cube, Singularity, Blue Shadow, Trio-Now, Tone of Spirit, Running in the Background, Gently Said, In Real Time, Waltz 1/19, Anybody Home?, A Different Take, Reptilian Fantasies, and Octopus Dreams.

An LP gives recorded music a tangible form, with sides, sequencing, and packaging that differ from a purely digital format.

I do not describe an LP as rare, limited, collectible, remastered, signed, first pressing, or otherwise special unless that information has been confirmed for the individual product.
