Professional Music Services
Jazz Music Services in Melrose, MA
I’m Bruce Gertz, a professional jazz bassist, educator, composer, and bandleader based in Melrose, MA. I offer jazz lessons for musicians who want to develop their playing and live jazz performances for those looking for experienced, authentic musicianship.
My approach to both services comes from decades spent teaching, performing, composing, and recording. Whether you want to grow as a musician or inquire about live jazz, you can work directly with me to discuss what you need.
Philosophy & Connection
Jazz Education & Performance Built on Experience
Music education and live performance have been connected throughout my career. The lessons I learn on the bandstand influence how I teach. Teaching encourages me to examine musical ideas more closely and bring that understanding back to performance.
I have served as a Professor of Bass at Berklee College of Music since 1976. My contributions to jazz education have received recognition from the International Association of Jazz Educators and the Jazz Education Network.
As a performer, I have worked and recorded with internationally recognized musicians while developing my own work as a bassist, composer, and bandleader. I have recorded more than 20 albums as a bandleader and continue to compose, teach, and perform.
Direct Personal Communication
When you contact Bruce Gertz Music, you are communicating directly with me. There is no large organization or sales team between us. You can tell me what you are looking for, and we can determine whether my jazz instruction or performance services fit your needs.

Two Core Offerings
Explore My Services
My primary professional services are jazz lessons and live jazz performances. Each offers a different way to experience the knowledge and perspective I have developed throughout my career.
Personalized Mentorship
Jazz Lessons
If you are looking for a jazz music instructor or bass instructor in Melrose, MA, I offer personalized instruction informed by decades of professional teaching and performing.
My experience includes both upright and electric bass. I began playing electric bass at age 14 and later became widely known for my work on upright bass. Working with both instruments has given me a broad perspective on technique, sound, rhythm, and the role of the bass in jazz.
Lessons can explore musicianship, listening, interpretation, improvisational development, technique, and musical communication according to your background and goals. I believe effective jazz bass instruction should help you understand the music rather than simply memorize information.
I bring real performance experience into the teaching process. My goal is to help you listen more closely, make stronger musical choices, and continue developing your own voice.

Live Performances
Live jazz has been a major part of my professional life. As a bassist, composer, and bandleader, I have spent decades performing music built around listening, improvisation, interaction, and communication.
My performance and recording credits include work with artists such as Gary Burton, Jerry Bergonzi, John Abercrombie, Bill Frisell, Dave Brubeck, Joe Lovano, Mike Stern, Count Basie, and many others.
That experience has taught me that a live jazz performance is never simply about playing the notes. Musicians respond to each other, to the music, and to the audience in real time. That sense of interaction gives jazz its energy.
If you are interested in booking live jazz, contact me directly. Tell me about your event and what you have in mind, and I can discuss availability and relevant performance details with you.
