I'm Bruce Gertz, a jazz bassist, educator, composer, author, and bandleader based in Melrose, Massachusetts. Why I Write

Music Education Beyond the Lesson

A music lesson happens at a particular moment. A book gives you the opportunity to return to an idea, examine it at your own pace, and consider how it connects with your own playing.

Writing has therefore become a natural extension of my work as a music instructor.

I have served as a Professor of Bass at Berklee College of Music since 1976. During my career, I have spent decades considering the questions musicians face as they develop: How do you improve your technique without losing sight of the music? How do you become a better listener? How does knowledge become instinct? How do you develop an individual voice while learning from the musicians who came before you?

Those are larger questions than any single exercise can answer.

My work as an author gives me another format for exploring musicianship and communicating ideas developed through teaching, performing, composing, and recording.

A Larger Body of Work

My writing belongs to the same body of work as my teaching, compositions, recordings, and performances. Each format gives me a different way to investigate music and communicate what I discover.

Six Books of Jazz Education

A Working Musician

Learning From a Working Jazz Musician

Music education changes when the ideas being taught are continually tested through actual performance. Throughout my career, I have worked as both an educator and a professional jazz musician.

A Professional Career

Performing and Recording

I have performed and recorded with artists including Gary Burton, Jerry Bergonzi, John Abercrombie, Bill Frisell, Dave Brubeck, Joe Lovano, and many others.

Those experiences have reinforced something important: musical knowledge becomes most useful when you can apply it while listening and responding to other musicians.

Jazz requires awareness. You need to understand your instrument, but you also need to understand what is happening around you. My books are part of that larger educational perspective. They come from a career in which teaching and performing continually inform each other.

Those experiences shape everything I write about musicianship.

Upright and Electric Bass

I began playing electric bass at age 14 and later became widely known for my work on upright bass. I continue to play and teach both instruments.

A Bassist's Perspective

A Bassist's Perspective on Musicianship

The bass occupies a unique place in jazz.

A bassist helps shape rhythm, harmony, movement, and interaction. That role demands technical control, but it also requires awareness of the entire musical environment.

Working across upright and electric bass has taught me to think beyond the physical differences between instruments. Questions of time, sound, phrasing, listening, and musical purpose remain central.

When I write about music, that broader perspective matters. Technique should give you more freedom to communicate. Knowledge should help you hear more clearly. Practice should eventually become music.

A Lifelong Practice

Books as Part of a Lifelong Practice

I don't believe musical development ends when you reach a certain level of experience. I continue to work at it myself.

A Daily Practice

Six Books From Decades of Jazz Education

Most mornings, I sit at the baby grand piano in my Melrose, Massachusetts home and compose. Some mornings produce a substantial idea. Others may produce only a fragment.

A fragment can still matter. You can return to it, examine it differently, and eventually discover where it wants to go. Learning an instrument can work in much the same way. Progress often develops from small ideas explored consistently over time.

Books can support that kind of process because they allow you to revisit material rather than expecting everything to become clear immediately. The goal is not simply to collect information. The goal is to turn what you learn into something you can hear, understand, and use.
