Live Jazz Performances in Melrose, MA & Worldwide

Live jazz happens in the moment. Musicians listen, respond, improvise, and shape the music together as it unfolds. I’m Bruce Gertz, a professional jazz bassist, composer, recording artist, and bandleader based in Melrose, MA. My performance career has been built around that kind of musical communication, with opportunities to perform for audiences and events locally and worldwide.

If you are looking for experienced live jazz, contact me directly to discuss your event, performance needs, and my availability.

The Live Experience

What Makes a Live Jazz Performance Different?

A jazz performance is more than a reproduction of music that has already been recorded. The structure may be familiar, but what happens within it can change every time musicians play together.

Improvisation is central to that experience.

That is what continues to make live jazz compelling to me after decades of performing.

When musicians truly listen to each other, the audience experiences something being created rather than simply repeated.

Each musician listens to what the others are doing and responds in real time. A rhythmic idea can change the direction of a passage. A different harmony can suggest a new possibility. Space is as important as sound. The result is a performance shaped by both preparation and spontaneity.

Foundations of the Music

The Bass at the Center of the Music

The bassist has a distinctive responsibility within a jazz ensemble. Bass can connect rhythm and harmony while helping establish the direction and feel of the music. It supports the other musicians, but support does not mean disappearing into the background. The bass can also influence the conversation through rhythm, phrasing, sound, dynamics, and improvisation.

My primary professional identity has become closely associated with upright bass, although my musical background also includes electric bass, which I began playing at age 14.

Leadership & Support

Years of performing have taught me that the bassist needs to understand both leadership and support. There are moments to establish a foundation and moments to respond.

There are also moments when leaving space creates more impact than adding another note. That balance is part of what I bring to live jazz performance.

Decades of Collaboration

Throughout my career, I have performed and recorded with musicians including Gary Burton, Jerry Bergonzi, John Abercrombie, Joey Calderazzo, Kenny Werner, Bill Frisell, Billy Hart, George Cables, Dave Brubeck, Joe Lovano, Mike Stern, Larry Coryell, Count Basie, and many others.

Every collaboration has its own musical character, and each has informed how I approach a performance today.

Bandleader & Composer

As a bandleader, I have recorded more than 20 albums, ranging from ensemble projects to solo bass performances. Selected releases include Blue Cube, Singularity, Running in the Background, Gently Said, In Real Time, and Octopus Dreams.

Being a bandleader is not simply about directing musicians. It means understanding the larger shape of the music while remaining responsive to what everyone contributes.

Decades of Performance & Collaboration

Playing with accomplished musicians requires careful listening and the ability to adapt. Those experiences continue to inform how I approach each performance today.

Improvisation, Interaction & Musical Communication

One of the defining characteristics of jazz is the relationship between individual expression and collective listening.

Improvisation does not happen in isolation. A musician's choices affect everyone else in the group. The rhythm section can reshape the energy beneath a solo. A melodic idea can inspire a response. A shift in dynamics can change the emotional direction of a performance.

That interaction is why two performances of the same piece do not have to feel identical. Boston Globe writer Bob Blumenthal recognized the evolution of my playing and described my music as having the power to evoke “feeling, thought, and motion.”

That idea is important to how I think about performance. Technical ability matters, but technique is not the final goal. The music should reach the listener.
