A Creative Career

Music & Educational Work From My Career in Jazz

My work has always extended beyond one part of music. Performing influences how I teach. Teaching encourages me to examine musical ideas more closely. Composition leads to new recordings, and writing provides another way to communicate ideas I have developed through playing and listening.

The Bruce Gertz Music shop brings those parts of my career together. I am the author of six books and have recorded more than 20 albums as a bandleader. My recorded work includes ensemble projects, original compositions, and solo bass recordings.

When you browse the shop, you can explore that work in three main formats: books, CDs, and vinyl records.

One Creative Process

Rather than separating my work as an educator from my work as a performing musician, I see each as part of the same creative process. The shop gives students, musicians, jazz listeners, and record collectors a direct way to explore that process.

My published and recorded work is organized into three formats below. Each offers a different way to explore my career as an author, bassist, composer, and bandleader.

Writing gives me a different way to communicate musical ideas.

As an educator, I have spent decades thinking about how musicians develop technique, listening skills, musical understanding, and an individual voice. I have served as a Professor of Bass at Berklee College of Music since 1976, and I am the author of six books.

My published work reflects another dimension of a career built around jazz education and musicianship. If you are interested in exploring my work beyond lessons and recordings, browse the available books in the shop.

Individual titles and product-specific information are provided with the available listings.

20+ Albums as Bandleader

Shop Jazz CDs

Recordings capture a particular moment in a musician's development. They preserve compositions, collaborations, improvisations, and musical conversations that may never happen in exactly the same way again.

As a bandleader, I have recorded more than 20 albums. My discography includes projects such as Blue Cube, Singularity, Running in the Background, Gently Said, In Real Time, and Octopus Dreams.

My 2017 quartet release Blue Cube received four stars in DownBeat. The solo bass recording Singularity received 3.5 stars in the same publication.

If you enjoy jazz on CD, explore the available recordings and discover music from different periods of my work as a bassist, composer, and bandleader.

Classic Format

Shop Jazz Vinyl Records

Vinyl offers its own way of experiencing recorded music. The physical format encourages you to put on a record, listen through a side, and spend time with a complete musical statement.

Available on LP

Shop Vinyl Records

For listeners who prefer jazz on LP, the vinyl section features available Bruce Gertz recordings in this classic format.

Availability can vary by recording. Browse the current listings for product-specific information rather than assuming every title in my discography is available on vinyl.

Whether you already know my music or are discovering it for the first time, the vinyl collection offers another way to experience my recorded work.

What You'll Find

Recorded Work

Recorded Music Built Around Exploration

The music can keep changing while retaining an identifiable voice.

My recordings represent different approaches to ensemble playing, composition, improvisation, and bass. Some projects focus on the interaction between musicians. Others give the bass a more exposed role. My solo work creates a different musical space from my quartet and other ensemble recordings.

I continue to compose regularly. Most mornings, I sit at the piano in my Melrose, MA home and work with musical ideas. Sometimes a complete composition develops. Sometimes I leave with only a small idea that may become useful later. Recording provides a way to take those ideas into another setting and hear what happens when composition meets performance.
